  • Deep Learning has allowed us to achieve impossible feats. However, we are trading explainability for performance. In critical fields like Medicine or Insurance, we can't blindly rely on AI yet unless we find a way to explain how our models decided. That's what's called XAI, or Explainable AI, and we'll take a look at that together.

  • The first two decades of the 21st century witnessed a series of macro-economic upheavals that reshaped the prevailing business models globally for years to come. In an increasingly complex world with shrinking room for error, and where cut-throat competition compels companies and organizations to pull on every optimization lever to thrive, digitalization emerges as an undeniable winning solution capable to helping organizations and individuals to navigate their eco-system complexity. The recent crises that shook the oil and gas industry coupled with the growing societal demand for clear energy sources also accelerated the energy transition unfolding before our eyes. Under these circumstances, how can the energy sector harness the power of the digital transformation to strive towards capital and carbon-efficient business model? What are the challenges grappling the oil & gas operators within the morphing technological landscape and what opportunities lays ahead for early adopters for the digital disruptive technologies? Finally, how can a heavily hydrocarbon anchored economy like Algeria leverage the digital-based solutions to successfully diversify its revenue streams while preserving energy supply security for future generations?

  • Authentication of billions of users to the increasing number of services provided on-line has created both a costly complexity and a target for fraudsters with very high risks. The migration from “user-name and password” access to biometrics is a step towards addressing both but is not enough. Multiple factors securely captured, stored and combined, through AI, provide the most secure authentication method. Continuous authentication based on behavioural data, guarantees that the user accessing securely a service is the same one during the online session. In this way security is maximized, privacy is safeguarded, user interaction is seamless and the costs are drastically reduced. In front of the new era of the fourth industrial revolution building and consolidating trust is a prerequisite. The protection of the infrastructure and of the increasing number of users of the rapidly growing number of services like education, health, financial services, business collaboration and others is of paramount importance. Although a new and innovative solution, behavioural authentication is tested and adopted on a world scale.

  • With malware like “emotet” claiming more than 2$ billion dollars in damages and the recent supply chain attack that hit “solar winds” infecting more than 30 companies, 13 of which are government agencies. It becomes clearer than ever that security is a key component of any technologies based infrastructure.

Understanding how these threat actors and malware authors operate is key to prevent the next attack from being successful.

In this session, I’ll talk about some of the tools and techniques that are currently being used by malware authors and threat actors to perform their attacks and how can we as security teams detect and hopefully prevent them from happening.

  • In this talk, I will be talking about cognitive radio networks (CRNs) and blockchain. Cognitive radio technology has been proposed and designed to meet the future wireless radio spectrum need of communications networks. With CRNs, the under-utilized wireless radio spectrum can be efficiently utilized using spectrum related functionalities. This dynamic spectrum management has been done traditionally using databases, however, with the blockchain technology, new opportunities can be realized in the management of this wireless radio spectrum. Blockchain can in fact help in achieving trust among different stake holders involved within the complete life cycle of dynamic spectrum management. Moreover, the trading of this wireless radio spectrum can be performed efficiently using blockchain. This short talk will cover all these aspects.

  • The era of the automobile has seriously degraded the quality of urban life through costly travel and visible environmental effects. A new urban planning paradigm must be at the heart of our road map for the years to come, the one where, within minutes, inhabitants can access their basic living needs by bike or on foot. In this talk, I'll recount some data-driven projects we conducted at QCRI to improve general mobility in the fast-growing city of Doha and show how these projects developed into real solutions used by thousands of taxi and delivery drivers for routing, mapping, and travel time estimation. In the second part, I'll focus on some novel insights into the interplay between the distributions of facilities and populations in various cities that maximize accessibility over the existing road networks.

And, it is not just music or videos. You constantly get recommendations on Amazon—people who bought this book also bought this other book. Same goes for restaurant recommendations. Then there are targeted advertisements, a manifestation of similar technology that assesses your personal profile and figures out what to show you. So, how do these systems work? Personalization is one of the key applications in machine learning with widespread usage across e-commerce, entertainment, production, healthcare and many other industries. This talk will present recent advances across the personalization industry and demonstrates their practical applications in real case-studies of world-leading online platforms
